Urgent vs Important Is the Wrong Question
A practical framework to focus on what’s important without burning out
Hey Productivity Explorer,
This week, I am traveling for work, which means I am not just prioritizing what matters at headquarters. I am also planning meetings, follow-ups, and decisions across satellite offices.
Every conversation has context. Every meeting has implications that extend beyond the room.
At the same time, personal priorities do not pause.
Health still needs attention. Family needs still exist. Finances still require decisions. None of that disappears just because work gets louder.
So everything piles up.
Work priorities feel urgent because I am visible and time-bound. Travel logistics create their own deadlines. Personal responsibilities sit in the background, quietly competing for attention. Each one feels reasonable on its own. Together, they create constant tension. You know how that goes.
However, this is the part that we leaders rarely talk about.
The challenge is not doing the work. It is deciding what deserves your attention right now without dropping something important elsewhere. Every choice feels like a trade-off, and most of those trade-offs are unclear.
You wake up already behind.
Your calendar is full before you have thought. Messages keep coming. Small decisions stack up. By the end of the day, you are exhausted, not from effort, but from constant prioritization under uncertainty.
To me, this is a decision load issue.
As responsibility grows, urgency becomes less trustworthy as a signal. If you keep reacting to what feels urgent, everything will feel urgent all the time.
That is how overwhelm becomes normal.
And that is exactly where better decision support, not more willpower, becomes necessary.
